that the mutineers had entered Canton from their barracks at Yen
Tang, outside the East Gate, that Ch'en and his Commissioners had
taken their departure and that the province was without a
government, I deemed it expedient that British troops should be
brought from Hongkong to garrison Shamien, where during the past fortnight a very large quantity of valuables had been stored for
safety by Chinese merchants. The Senior Naval Officer, Commander C.

The quiet of the previous evening proved il-
